Ball State University Makes High Level Microscopy Available To Life Science Companies
Ball State University
Ball State University's Micro-Imaging facility houses a JEOL JEM-1400 transmission electron microscope (TEM).  The TEM operates at voltages up to 120kV using a LaB6 filament permitting resolution of lattice structures of 0.2nm and point structures at 0.38nm.  Our TEM is equipped with two CCD cameras.  A side-mounted Gatan Orius SC1000 camera captures a large field of view required by most life science applications at a resolution of 4008X2672 pixels.  The anti-blooming feature of this camera makes it ideal for collecting diffraction patterns.  A bottom-mounted Ultrascan 1000XP camera captures 2048X2048 pixel images with very high sensitivity for most material science applications.

While the entire instrument can be operated remotely, we permit remote connectivity over a secured virtual private network (VPN) to our camera systems.  This connection allows users and collaborators to view video rate streaming of live samples from any place with an internet connection.  This "over the shoulder" approach offers our collaborators the ability to collect needed images in a secure environment without the need for travel to Ball State's Micro-Imaging Facility.

For more information, please e-mail: TEM@bsu.edu
